Description
Alstar 2" helical focuser - sharper planets in any telescope One of the biggest challenges in photographing the Moon and planets is precise focusing of the object. Not all telescopes are well equipped for this. Equipping your telescope with the Alstar 2" helical focuser is quick and straightforward, and you will then always be able to find the perfect point of focus. There is a flat adapter combination: Alstar T / T2 Male Thread 48mm to 42mm Female M48 to M42 Telescope Adapter. The screw-less focuser for your telescope - it simply slides in Many telescopes have a focuser which does not allow very precise focusing. Especially difficult jobs such as focusing on a planet can be a real challenge. This helical focuser elegantly overcomes the problem. It is suitable for both refractors and Newtonian telescopes, but is also particularly useful with Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes. You need to do nothing more than to connect it to your existing focuser. Suitable for all 2" focusers The helical focuser has a 2" barrel. This allows it be inserted into the focuser just like an eyepiece. Its separate focusing mechanism now takes over the job of precision focusing. Sharper focused planets via the helical mechanism Once the helical focuser is attached, simply turn the oversized focusing knob - which you can control easily even with gloves on in winter. The rotating mechanism allows very smooth and continuous focusing, and without any play. Your new focuser does exactly what you tell it to. Setting scale - for finding the optimal focus position again .A graduated scale always shows you the focus position you have just set. Once you've found the perfect point of focus, then you just need to remember this setting on the scale - you will then always be able to find it in future. The scale itself is similar to the millimetre markings on a ruler, but each marking here moves the focuser by only around 0.1 mm.

I bought this for use on an 8" LX200 which doesn't have a Zero Shift focuser. Basically, you get the picture roughly focused using a bright star and then, you can use this to get a much more precise focus. Works well when you get the hang of it. Since it's 2", you have to have the proper equipment to utilize a 2" eyepiece but, once you have that and a T-ring for your camera, things work pretty well. Once you have a good focus on the star, lock down the focus screws and move to your intended target. One thing to note, since this adapter is plastic and, most of the telescope components are metal, using this when the outdoor temperature is very low is nearly impossible since metal contracts and a 2" OD piece of plastic won't fit in a 2" ID metal hole anymore - discovered this when trying to use the telescope at -20F this winter.
